The Doctor Can Never Be In Torchwood

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has said that The Doctor will never appear in Torchwood.

The Sherlock writer argued that the Time Lord - currently played by Matt Smith - would not be an appropriate addition to the more adult spinoff series, but teased that John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness could continue to appear in both programs.

"The Doctor could never go to Torchwood," Moffat told TVLine. "[Torchwood executive] Russell [T Davies] and I both agree on that. Doctor Who has a tremendous relationship with children in Britain. They'd want to watch Torchwood then, and it's not really a children's show."

Moffat further teased that he had planned for Captain Jack to cameo in Doctor Who's most recent episode, 'A Good Man Goes To War'.

"I'd have [brought back Captain Jack] for 'A Good Man Goes To War', but John was busy doing Miracle Day... When we've got a good story, we'll do it. You can't just bring somebody back and say, 'That's a story'.

"I won't be thinking, 'How do you bring Captain Jack back?' I'll be thinking, 'You know what this needs? We need to bring Jack back for it'."

Barrowman previously declared that he would return to Doctor Who "at the drop of a hat". He revealed at Comic-Con last week that he would love a role on Doctor Who's 50th anniversary in 2013.

Ho Hum.....

Well with Doctor Who now ended in the mid-season break and not returning until September the news in the Whoniverse is rather still. Hopefully we will hear some news of the highly anticipated upcoming episodes soon but until then there are a few things to watch out for in the mean time.

June 2011 - Well as far as I can tell there isn't much going on this month but I am sure we will be hearing a bit more on Torchwood Miracle Day.

July 2011 - On July 8, 2011 Torchwood: Miracle Day will air on Starz in the US and on BBC1 in the UK.

The fourth series of the British science fiction television series Torchwood, a spin-off from the long-running show Doctor Who of the BBC's drama production house BBC Cymru Wales, its international arm BBC Worldwide and US premium network Starz, will be broadcast over ten episodes starting July 8, 2011. In Canada, the show will be broadcast on Space. Most of the filming took place in Los Angeles, California with only two weeks being shot in Wales.

Early development rumours suggested that the fourth series would be a reboot of the show, and that it would air on the Fox net work in the United States. However, the deal with Fox did not go through and a new co-production deal with Starz was officially announced. (which for us here int the US means that we have to pay extra for the channel in order to watch the series, which I am not all that happy about!!). Creator and executive producer Russell T Davies clarified the focus of the series, stating "it's very much the next step. It's not a new version, it's not a reboot. We're simply moving countries." The second executive producer, Julie Gardner, described the new series as being "absolutely rebooted to welcome in a new audience". Can we say Conflicting statements??!! Series writer Jane Espenson clarified further, describing the series as strictly "a continuation of the UK show".

Writers for the series were confirmed as Russell T Davies, John Shiban, Doris Egan, Jane Espenson and John Fay. Espenson will write four episodes. Kelly Manners will be producing in the US, and Brian Minchin will do this job in the UK. The central plot is that suddenly, no one on Earth dies, and this provokes increasingly mixed reactions as the population soars. "What is society going to do now?", Davies poses.

August 2011 - On August 19, 2011 the remake of the 1985 cult hit Fright Night comes to screens. The roles will be reprised by Colin Firth as the sinister yet seductive Vampire, Jerry Dandridge; Anton Yelchin as the boy next door, Charlie Brewster; and our favorite loveable sexy 10th Doctor, David Tennant will be playing Peter Vincent.

Here is the synopsis:

Senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all—he's running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl in high school. In fact, he's so cool he's even dissing his best friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there's something not quite right— yet no one, including Charley's mom (Toni Collette), seems to notice! After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charley comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone that he's telling the truth, Charley has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

September 2011 - Although I do not know exactly what date, Doctor Who will be returning sometime in September 2011. After the way A Good Man Goes To War ended, I think it is safe to say that people are counting the days until we can all see what will happen next! Steven Moffet has defiantly rattled peoples brains with this series from the very beginning starting with witnessing the apparent death of The Doctor. Throughout the series there have been some major jaw dropping moments including the little girl starting to regenerate in an alley, Amy's pregnancy, The Tardis as a human and being called his wife, two doctor's one Gallifreyan the other a ganger, Amy that has been with Rory and the Doctor was indeed just flesh, the baby being part timelord, Amy reveling to the Doctor that he will die, The Doctor taking off in the Tardis leaving everyone behind, and the revelation of who River Song really is.

I am extremely curious to see exactly where Moffet is heading with all of this??!! In some episodes, I think he is trying a bit to hard to keep everyone off track it seems to go way off the winding road that it doesn't always make sense. We still need to find out who River actually kills, now so far my suspicions have not been to far off, but I am to think that it is The Doctor who she kills. However, how can that be possible? Could this mean the end of Doctor Who? And if River is part timelord, how was it that she was killed in season 4 with David Tenannt as The Doctor in Forest Of The Dead? So many questions and still so little answered. Well hopefully Steven Moffet with shed some light on these questions when the series returns in the fall.

So Rory's shot Amy. The TARDIS has exploded with River inside it. And The Doctor has been trapped in the Pandorica. In short, it's the end of the universe. But there's still one episode of the series to go, so things must be far from over, right? Not if you believe Steven Moffat. We caught up with the Doctor Who showrunner at the launch of the latest Adventure Game in Edinburgh to glean what we could about the finale and beyond.

When you came to plan out this series, did you have the finale in your head from the start?
"I had aspects of it. I had certain things I needed that I need to get to, and I had an overarching idea that would, and I suppose it's a better conversation to have after next week's episode. There are certain things that you'll see that have been there from the beginning. There's been quite a careful planning of things, which is pretty obvious from episode 12, that everything was set up and paid off there. There's more coming next week, in the event that anyone comes out of the Pandorica. So yeah, you have to leave yourself some space to improvise, otherwise it gets boring, otherwise you get bored with your own script, and quite a lot of episode 13, which is a mad episode, is brand new. But there are certain key points where I know I wanted 'this'. I'm thinking of the next finale right now so I can plot the rest of the series. I know what the big reveals are and the big hopefully jaw dropping moments are going to be."

So you'll be planning a similar sort of setup for the next series?
"Similar in the sense that it's an arc that doesn't get in the way too much. That's in the event if there is another series, which is all told in flashback."

Episode twelve ended with an almighty trio of cliffhangers. Can you tell us anything at all about episode 13?
"Well, there's going to be some light music and a short note of apology saying, 'The universe ended last week, we're really sorry, we don't know what you're doing here, didn't you get the message?'"

Does the series wrap things up with a neat resolve in time for the Christmas special?
"Well we blew up the universe, so it'll be a nice flashback episode at Christmas."

Will there be any kind of trailer for the Christmas special after the episode?
"After the 50 minutes of gentle music and weeping apology? Nope. The universe has ended."

Will you at least reveal the title?
"There will be a Christmas special - well, a flashback Christmas special - but no, we won't be telling you anything, not a single thing. It's too early."

Do you know when we'll find out?
"No, I don't actually know when we'll start releasing that information. I genuinely don't! [We'll] try and work what we've normally done as with all these specials before, but there'll be some strategy that won't be mine."

Watching this series back as it's aired, have you learned any lessons about what works and what doesn't?
"I think you learn things every day, yeah. A lot of things we learn isn't necessarily artistic in a way, sometimes it's practical, it's 'That's where you spend your money, over there, not over there, over there'. A lot thinking that's wasted money. Don't use your CGI when you need a spaceship, when you use CGI somewhere make sure it blows something up. Just stuff like that. It's less artistic and more practical."

How far into planning series six are you?
"Not far enough, I think is the answer to that! I've got lots of plans - plans are not nearly as useful as scripts, I find - so I'd like to have more scripts and fewer plans. We're not quite as ahead of the game as we were last time. But it's fine."

Do you have all of your writers confirmed yet?
"We've got a fair number of them, there's one more I'm chasing, but yeah."

Do you think it's possible Russell could come back to write an episode?
"Is it possible? He's pretty adamant that he's not going to. I'm in constant touch with him. I don't know, you'd have to ask him. He did an awful lot of Doctor Who for an awful lot of years, and I think he's finding it in a way hard, because he's done a Doctor Who story in effect for Sarah Jane Adventures. So I think he possibly wants to get away from it for a bit. I can understand that, because he did a hell of a lot. But I'd love to get him, it would be just joyous to get him back because I miss him."

So it's something you'd like to see happen?
"Oh I would love it, and I said to him, "Look I want" and he said, 'Don't even ask me for series five because I'm just knackered, I just want to go lie down,' and I think I'll find out how that feels. But I did ask him for series six, and I always will."

And you definitely can't tell us anything about episode 13?
"The universe has ended, mate, he's dead. The Doctor is in the Pandorica, there's this little voice saying: 'Hello, that was a big bang wasn't it? Oh, something happened out there?'"
