The Sarah Jane Adventures creator Russell T. Davies has heaped praise upon the BBC for commissioning a third season of the family drama.

"This really is the best news," he told Doctor Who Magazine. "In an age of shrinking budgets and an ever-changing television landscape, children's TV is right at the front line, and personally I think it's one of the most vital areas to protect and nourish. So this commission is wonderful."

"We're all determined to repay Children's BBC by delivering an amazing show," Davies continued, "[and] work has been underway for quite some time in the hope of this commission and the desks are already piled high with scripts."Davies also confirmed that he will remain as the show's executive producer, despite his imminent departure from its parent show. "I might be leaving Doctor Who," he said, "but not Sarah Jane."

3RD SEASON OF SJA

Elisabeth Sladen has revealed that a third season of The Sarah Jane Adventures is being prepared."They’re writing it now, I believe," she told entertainment website Last Broadcast. "I’m very proud of the show, it’ll be lovely to do another series. And it’d be really lovely for the children... I mean ‘my co-stars’!"The veteran actress, who first joined parent show Doctor Who in 1973, added that Yasmin Paige may not return to Sarah Jane as Maria Jackson. "I’m not sure, Yasmin moved on to focus on her studies and Anjli’s [Mohindra] role has really settled in now - the new family have fitted in seamlessly," she said.

Intrepid investigator Sarah Jane Smith returns to our screens this week, fresh from helping her Time Lord pal thwart the Daleks alongside surrogate son Luke and computer Mr. Smith. Armed once more with her sonic lipgloss and young cohorts, Sarah Jane will face a procession of dastardly enemies during the second season, which comprises six stories split into two episodes each.The RegularsThe big news is that actress Yasmin Paige will be departing the show in the early part of the season because filming clashed with her GCSEs. Now if only her father was called Sanjay then an EastEnders crossover could have been a possibility.New EnemiesClown phobia is a pretty common fear for children and adults alike - and Sarah Jane is no exception. So expect there to be some scuttling behind the sofa during second story 'The Day Of The Clown' - especially because former gameshow host Bradley Walsh will be donning the make-up and juggling some balls. The legend of the Pied Piper is also set to play a prominent part of the circus-related narrative too, which revolves around local children going missing. That sounds a bit similar to the laser quest-based 'Warriors Of Kudlak' last year, but the story does manage to throw in the mysterious Pharos research centre glimpsed during last year's finale.

Old Enemies
A lone Sontaran in the spud-faced shape of Commander Kaagh roams the curiously-titled Goblin's Copse in the exciting opening adventure, which functions as a sequel to Doctor Who episode 'The Poison Sky' from earlier this year. Watch out for a nifty new method for a Sontaran to remove his helmet. The diminutive Graske is back too, but it remains to be seen whether the mega scary 'Trickster' is in charge of him again. Perhaps he's too busy sulking after his time beetle failed to alter Donna Noble's past for good?Delving back to the very origins of The Sarah Jane Adventures, the dreaded Mrs. Wormwood (Samantha Bond) and her fellow Bane return to do business for the season finale. Purportedly working with the Sontarans, it'll be fascinating to see how Wormwood plots global domination this time, following her previous fizzy drink masterplan.

Old Friends
Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart makes his first canonical on-screen appearance since the 1989 Doctor Who story 'Battlefield'. The UNIT legend, freshly bestowed with a knighthood, appeared in many adventures and alongside several Doctors over the years since his Yeti-fighting debut as a Colonel in 1968's 'The Web Of Fear'.Seeing as the character spans 40 years and struck up a friendship with Sarah Jane in the mid 1970s, it's no wonder that Whovians are drooling at the prospect of his imminent return. Squeals of joy will be heard across the nation should he bark out his famous catchphrase "five rounds rapid!" There's no word on whether K-9 will return yet. Perhaps he's too busy wagging his metal tail on the set of the cartoon spinoff that's been caught in development hell for the best part of two decades?

Sontaran Return to Sarah Jane: Digital Spy

'The Last Sontaran' refers to Commander Kaagh, who survived the destruction of the Sontaran battlefleet at the hands of the Doctor and came crashing down to Earth (with the scar to prove it).He's now wandering the woods, generally causing mischief and plotting to destroy the planet by crashing satellites into nuclear sites.

Sarah Jane is genuinely scared when she first discovers the Sontaran's ship. "This is too big for us," she tells the kids. "We have to call UNIT."As well as references to UNIT (she never gets to make that call, by the way), there are also references to the Doctor - and flashbacks to Doctor Who - plus mention of an incident from an early series three episode.

At one point Sarah Jane is asked to make a difficult choice but refuses, with the somewhat questionable logic: "One life is as sacred as an entire planet."Alongside all this we have the departure of original gang member Maria (Yasmin Paige) after her dad Alan lands a job in America.

As previously hinted, though, this is definitely not the last we see of the two characters this series. (Keep your eyes peeled around episode 8...)

The Sarah Jane Adventures - CBBC's Doctor Who spinoff for kids - is back for a second series. We say "for kids", but a large number of fully-grown Whovians may well disagree. The new run of 12 episodes promises to deliver a Smörgåsbord of delights for all ages, from a Sontaran in episode one to the much-anticipated return of The Brig in the series finale. We paid a visit to the set of the show to find out more from the lovely Elisabeth Sladen.

How would you say this series of Sarah Jane Adventures is different from the first?

"It comes in the dialogue. It's just more explanatory and it doesn't cut off quite so quickly. There are more grown-up stories and it's much harder hitting, I think. We stay with the problem this time, therefore we have to have dialogue that will not patronise."

Have you learnt more about Sarah Jane this series?

"I learn more about her every day. Russell [T Davies] said 'There are so many places she can go. We're only just starting to find out about her'. When the series started, I did think 'where is this going?' Quite honestly, when the pilot went out, I thought I was going to get so much stick from journalists. I love the programme, and always thought it was very good, but that's not always other people's perceptions. It's lovely how people have been so embracing of it."

How did you react when you were offered Sarah Jane Adventures?

"I went for a meal with Russell and Julie [Gardner, BBC Wales head of drama] and I actually thought I was going to be offered to go into Torchwood! Then I thought it was going to be K-9 and Sarah Jane, after what happened in 'School Reunion'. I loved K-9 to bits, but I wondered if that could work. They would have had to do something with the dog - they really would - because all you could do is crouch down and talk to it. That's very limiting, so I am blessed that I have the kids instead!"

How did you feel about The Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) coming back?

"I've seen Nick on and off over the years, but he was so pleased to be asked back. It's a lovely thing to do because he's spoken about doing it and it's really nice for the fans."

Did he expect to be asked back?

"I don't think he did. I think he thought his time had gone, because now there's a different UNIT in place."Is it a reunion for the two characters on-screen?"They kind of muzz over that a little, but it has been a long time, so that leaves it open to how long it's been. Sarah Jane doesn't really want to introduce the kids to UNIT, because they use guns. Sarah Jane doesn't think a gun is a good thing, not even as a last resort, so it must be pretty special to have to go to The Brig."

It's often rumoured, but do you think the Doctor could ever appear in Sarah Jane Adventures?

"Well, who would have thought Sarah Jane could have been working with Torchwood? I never thought that could happen! That's what was so amazing about the Doctor Who [finale]. The prospect of crossover between the programmes is quite incredible, so 'yes' in answer to your question, I don't see why you couldn't have the Doctor on this show."

Would you go back to Doctor Who again?

"I actually think that was the last time. But then again, I thought 'School Reunion' was the last time! I thought 'what a lovely send-off, thankyou so much', but now I think that actually might be the last time. I would be really happy if it ended there."

How do you feel about Russell leaving?

"I don't know if he's leaving us, though. I truly, truly don't know that. Steven [Moffat] is taking over Who, which will be really interesting. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens there."

Will there be a third series of Sarah Jane?

"It's in the offing. It depends on this [series] and there are a lot of ifs. I think they're planning it, and it would be lovely to see where we go next!"

This series on Sarah Jane Adventures, we have several departures, one new arrival and the return of a major character from the classic Who series.

Goodbye Maria...In the second episode we wave goodbye to original gang member Maria Jackson (Yasmin Paige), her dad Alan (Joseph Millson) and her mum Chrissie (Juliet Cowan). Maria is forced to bid farewell to the group after Alan lands a new job in the US. Chrissie doesn't go with them but will no longer feature in the show. We caught up with Juliet Cowan last week to get her take on the Jackson family's departure.

On hearing the news of Maria's departure, Sarah Jane has a funny turn and starts to blank the youngster. "People have left Sarah Jane's life over the years, and never come back," explains Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane). "All of a sudden, she's left herself open to someone that she's very fond of, and she puts up a wall."

Eventually SJ sees the error of her ways and helps give Maria the send-off she deserves.For those who asked, Maria is off the regular cast but be assured that it definitely isn't the last we see of her (or Alan) this series....

Hello Rani!No sooner has Maria been shipped off in a taxi than a new female character is on the scene. Rani (Anjli Mohindra) arrives in episode three as the daughter of new school headmaster Mr. Chandra (Ace Bhatti) and immediately starts poking her nose into the business of Sarah Jane & co. And before too long she becomes a fully paid-up member of the team.

The Episodes

Once again each Sarah Jane "story" comes in two episodes, with a total of twelve episodes in the series (up from ten in the first series).

The Enemies

As the title of the first story suggests, the Sontarans (last seen in Who series four) are back again in this series. The gang happen across the last remaining Sontaran, Commander Kaagh, wandering around the forest and must thwart his plan to destroy the Earth with kamikaze satellites.In story two we meet Odd Bob The Clown, played by Bradley Walsh, who is stalking new girl Rani. "This clown transforms into different things," Tom Knight (Luke) tells me. "For each transformation Bradley does a different accent - it's very funny."He adds: "We have other enemies too. Some guy turns evil - he finds this medallion and it turns him crazy! It's all about mishandling power."Evil schemer Mrs Wormwood (Samantha Bond) also returns later in the series as part of a frightening new alliance.

The BrigOK, so it's not been the best-kept secret but The Brigadier (Nicholas Courtney) - fan favourite from the classic series - is making a special appearance (after an absence of almost 20 years) in the series finale. "I've seen Nick on and off over the years but he was so pleased to be asked back," says Elizabeth Sladen. "It's a lovely thing to do because he's spoken about doing it and I think that's really nice for the fans."Of the character's return, she adds: "Sarah Jane doesn't really want to introduce the kids to UNIT, because they use guns. Sarah Jane doesn't think a gun is a good thing, not even as a last resort, so it must be pretty special to have to go to The Brig."

The finale

Maybe it's way too early to be thinking about exactly how this series will end, but I'm sure you'll appreciate the following hints, courtesy of the cast."I don't think it's a very steep cliffhanger but it's not a terrible ending," says Tom. "You're going to sit there and think 'I want to see what happens next'."Anjli adds: "I like the ending because we've got a really nice combination of people and monsters. It's not just one monster either... we've got two different monsters who I don't think have been together before. They unite and form an evil pair."

14-year-old Luke Smith looks just like any other normal teenage boy, but look closer and you'll see that he's very, very special. Grown by the alien Bane as The Archetype in their plan for world domination, Luke has the brain power of 10,000 people but, as he's only really a year or so old, his understanding of the world around him is sometimes lacking. But he's a fast learner, and his intelligence often proves key in saving the day.

Clyde Langer played by Daniel Anthony

Clyde Langer is 15, confident and the team joker, happiest when taking on aliens and monsters to save the planet. He lives with his mum, loves football, has a flair for art (which he keeps quiet cos it's not always seen as that cool) and has a healthy disrespect for authority. When teamed with Luke's intelligence, Rani's instincts and Sarah Jane's experience, the friends are a force to be reckoned with.

Rani Chandra played by Anjli Mohindra

15, inquisitive, smart and sassy. Wants to be a journalist, a sort of junior Sarah Jane, and thus idolises Sarah Jane just a little and in return, Sarah Jane takes her happily on her investigations. Gets on well with her parents, although she's always embarrassed that her dad is the new Head Teacher at Park Vale. Rani enjoys Luke's company because they're both quite bright and eager to learn. However, she's equally fond of Clyde because he's cool and a bit rebellious, and has charm.

Gita Chandra played by Mina Anwar

Rani's mum is a strong-willed, independent businesswoman, who runs her own flower shop called Bloomin' Lovely. Gita really likes Sarah Jane - she appreciates the fact she wants to help Rani be a journalist. Gita is a lovely person, although she can occasionally be a little overpowering and tends to burst into things uninvited and not take the hint that it's time to leave.

Haresh Chandra played by Ace Bhatti

The new Head Teacher of Park Vale and Rani's dad, he can be prone to slight pomposity, due to the authority at the school. A great cook, he adores Rani and is very pleased that she has befriended Luke Smith, whose intelligence he respects. He's decidedly less impressed by her friendship with Clyde, who he sees as trouble and so always has one watchful eye on his daughter and the other on Clyde.

Meet Sarah Janes New Sidekick

Doctor Who may be off air until Christmas, but The Sarah Jane Adventures will be back in short order to help tide us over. The second series, airing on BBC One from later this month, promises to offer more action, more monsters and at least one familiar face from Doctor Who history. Sarah Jane's team is also changing, as Maria Jackson departs and feisty new girl Rani Chandra arrives. Tube Talk grabbed a quick with young actress Anjli Mohindra to find out more about the new arrival.

How have you found working on Sarah Jane?

"It's been really great. Sometimes when you come into a show, everybody has already formed a little tight group and you feel a bit intimidated, but not at all. Everyone's been really welcoming."

When does your character join the group?

"Fairly near the start, after bidding farewell to [Maria]. I have a bit of a nosey into the lives of the world-saving team and plot my way in!"

What's Rani like?

"I'd say she's pretty keen. She shadows Sarah Jane a lot. If there's a moment where she doesn't quite know how to deal with the situation - whether to be quiet, scared or worried - she will always watch Sarah Jane. If Sarah Jane goes in being really bolshy, you'll see Rani up there a few seconds later as well. She's also a girl between two guys at times, which is nice!"

How does Sarah Jane feel about having a new apprentice?

"It does take some getting used to for Sarah Jane, because at first she's not that interested in taking on another child. But she does, and it turns out to be a nice relationship."

Are there any similarities between Rani and Maria?

"I'm not here to play the next Maria Jackson. It's a completely different character, which is lovely. The only similarity that she has is that she's a girl and she lives in the same house. In personality terms, I don't think they're that similar. They're both quite strong-willed, though."

Did you watch the first series?

"Yes. It was a lot younger than my age range - I'm eighteen - but I saw it a few times. Obviously I got more into it after I'd found out I had the audition! I thought it was great because normally children's TV is patronising, but not with this. There's no morals at the end of every story. It's completely the same as Doctor Who. Adults can watch it as well, which is great."Even more so, with Doctor Who not being on the air as much next year."I just finished sixth form and more of my teachers were excited [about my new job] than the pupils! A lot of the teachers don't actually have kids that are young enough to justify them watching it. So I think adults are already interested in it and hopefully that's going to go up this series."

Series two of The Sarah Jane Adventures airs on BBC One and the CBBC Channel from later this month.

Sarah Jane Season 2 is due to air later this month

New Cast in SJA

When The Sarah Jane Adventures returns to BBC1 for a second series, there’ll be a new face in the regular cast. It’s GCSE year for young actress Yasmin Paige (Maria Jackson), so she’s bowing out. But Sarah Jane’s Scooby gang won’t be short-handed, since new girl Anjli Mohindra is stepping into the breach as Rani Chandra, who moves into the Jacksons’ old house with her parents.

SFX went on set in Penarth recently to speak to the cast. Here’s what Anjli had to say for herself:

On joining the cast:“It’s been really great, because sometimes when you come into a show everyone’s already all tight in a performed group and you feel a bit intimidated but absolutely not at all. I completely feel part of the team, and it’s just fantastic coming into a group of mates that are already formed but welcome other people in as friends.”

On when her character joins the series:“Fairly near the start, after saying farewell to the third sidekick, I kind of have a bit of a nosey into the lives of the world-saving team and kind of butt my way in!”

On whether she’s seen the series before:“Well, it is a lot younger than my age range because I’m 18, but I have seen it on TV a few times and got a lot more into it as I found about the auditions. At first I didn’t actually know how popular it was, until you watch a bit more and hear a lot more people talking about it, and you go onto the website and there’s forums and loads of stuff going on around it. But yeah, I thought it was great, because with children's TV it’s normally quite patronising, but not with this at all. There’s no ‘moral of the day’ at the end of every story, it’s just completely the same as Doctor Who, and adults can watch it as well, which I thought was great.”

On whether Rani is similar to Maria:“The only similarity that she has is that she’s a girl, really, and she lives in the same house, and that’s about as far as it goes. In personality terms I don’t think they’re that similar, apart from they’re both quite strong-willed, but I think there’s a lot less tears from Rani than there were from Maria. I think her relationship with Sarah Jane is a lot different as well. I think with Rani she’s very much an apprentice of Sarah Jane, which is a really nice relationship, I think. But it does take some getting use to because at first you’ll find that Sarah Jane is not really that interested in taking on another child.”“She’s kind of shadowing Sarah Jane a lot. And you’ll see that if there’s a moment where she doesn’t quite know how to attack a situation, whether to be quiet, whether to be scared, worried, or to be strong, she’ll always watch Sarah Jane. If Sarah Jane goes in being really bolshy, you’ll see a few seconds later she’s up there as well. She’s just really into her fighting - not fighting physically, but fighting mentally! She’s quite strong, really strong-willed. And she’s a girl between two guys at times, which is nice.”

On her favourite story of the season:“I like the ending, because we’ve got a really nice combination of monsters in that one. And it’s not just one monster either – we’ve got two different monsters, who unite and form an evil pair, so that’s a good one!”

"With a longer run than last year," Davies comments, "We've got a wide and bold range of stories. One's a sequel to a SJA story from last year. One's even a sequel to one of the Doctor's adventures! But as ever, there are new monsters, new villains, and new problems for the regular cast."

RTD also confirms the return of Nicholas Courtney, appears by Bradley Walsh (playing an alien with three identities) and Russ Abbott - as well as the return of Floella Benjamin (last seen in "The Lost Boy") and Samantha Bond as the villainous Mrs. Wormwood, who - through Bubbleshock! - attempted to conquer the world in nthe very first SJA "Invasion of the Bane".

Filming concluded on the series Friday August 2nd.

SJA Scary???

Alexander Armstrong has praised the 'scary' storytelling on CBBC show The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine ahead of the second season's launch, the voice of Sarah Jane's computer Mr. Smith said: "I hope this starts a new era of really innovative children's programming, because the bar has now been set incredibly high. It's storytelling that doesn't mess about."

Armstrong, who also voiced Mr. Smith in the fourth season Doctor Who finale, added: "Kids have to deal with some harsh things in the show, but life is dangerous and a little bit scary. Kids love to be scared, don't they?"

Episodes 9 and 10:

PLOT:The episodes revolve around Sarah Jane and Luke being somehow taken back in time to the 1950's, to Foxglove Village - at a time when the local fete is taking place. What's unusual about all this?! Sarah's parents are there too, as is a likkle baby Sarah Jane Smith! Trouble is, grown up Sarah doesn't remember momma (Barbara) or her papa - they died in a car accident when she was still a baby. Can Sarah do what it takes to prevent herself from becoming an orphan, by changing the course of history?!









**** I have to say so far from what I am hearing and seeing of the Sarah Jane Adventures, it looks to be that this season is going to be even better then last season!!! Not only is it a great show for young children but it is a great show for adults as well!!!
