Plot:

River Song uses her gun to blast a hole in the wall, enabling her, The Doctor and the others to escape the shadow-possessed Proper Dave.

Donna wakes up in an ambulance with no memories of her past life. She is treated in a facility by Doctor Moon and life quickly flies by. Before she knows it, she is married to her ideal man Lee, who has a stammer, and has two kids of her own. She is then approached by a hooded figure in a playground, who turns out to be Miss Evangelista. She warns Donna that the world is not real. Donna soon observes that all the children in the playground have the same face.

The Doctor squabbles with River Song, but is soon stunned when he learns that he tells her his true name at some stage in his future. The Time Lord tries to reason with the Vashta Nerada and finds out they came as microspores in millions and millions of books and then hatched.

The Doctor figures out that the library computer's hard drive - CAL - is the key to bringing Donna back, for it has literally saved her to its hard drive. The team travels to the core of the planet to locate the computer. It transpires that the little girl is in fact the hard drive, and was originally a relative of Strackman Lux.

River Song knocks The Doctor out to prevent him stopping her sacrificing herself to bring back Donna and the others. In order to restore those who have been saved, she has to provide memory to Cal, which burns out her mind. She dies, as the Doctor looks on, handcuffed to a wall.

Donna and the other saved people return, but she cannot find Lee and thinks that perhaps he didn't exist after all. Lee sees her but his stammer prevents him from calling out to her before he is teleported away.

The Doctor realizes in the nick of time that, knowing River's fate and having years to think of a way to save her, his future self must have given her the screwdriver for a reason. He finds that, like the data ghosts, her consciousness has been saved in her sonic screwdriver. River Song comes back to life in the fantasy world of the hard drive, meeting Miss Evangelista and the rest of her team again.

Forest of the Dead Overnight Ratings

Doctor Who was back at the top of the list with unofficial figures showing that episode nine of Series Four, Forest of the Dead, was watched by 7.1 million viewers, giving it a 40.0% share of the total television audience, the highest overnight share this series.

The programme was by far the most watched of Saturday, beating the second placed Casualty by 1.6 million viewers.

The quarter hour figures show that the only time any of the networks got over 6 million viewers watching was the 45 minutes when Doctor Who was on.

The final 15 minutes had an average of 7.7 million.ITV1's highest rated programme of the day was Euro 2008 with 4.0 million.

The programme is currently the 10th most watched of the week. Final figures will be released by BARB in ten days time.

The Forest of the Dead
With Donna gone, the Doctor is left to fend off shadows in the Library, aided by future companion River Song. He's still in denial that they will have known each other - but then she whispers something in his ear that leaves him totally convinced. To say that, by the end of the episode, we find out what she said would only be a half-truth.

Meanwhile, Miss Noble is living out her life at a countryside retreat. The Doctor is nothing more than a dream for her. She soon gets a stuttering spouse, two kids, the perfect life - but she can't shake the feeling that something is not quite right.

The second part of the adventure that kicked off with Silence in the Library sees the Doctor trying to rescue Donna and figure out just what the hell is going on in Forest Of The Dead, this Saturday at 7pm, BBC One.

As the shadows rise and march, the Doctor forges an alliance with the mysterious River Song - but can anyone stop the Vashta Nerada?

While the Doctor discovers long-buried secrets and revelations about his own future, the sinister Nodes declare that Donna is doomed.

Newsround's outgoing Doctor Who fan Lizo (bye Lizo, thanks for the unbalanced reviews!) says of Forest of the Dead:

The Doctor, devastated at losing Donna, knows that if they're going to survive he needs to solve the mystery of what the little girl has to do with the Library. But he also wants to find out what his relationship with River Song is.

Where the first episode was terrifying, this story has a much more eerie atmosphere, as it gradually becomes clear what's really been happening in the Library.

David Tennant plays the Doctor and Catherine Tate plays his companion, Donna Noble. Guest staring are Alex Kingston as River Song, Colin Salmon as Dr Moon, and Steve Pemberton Mr Lux.

Undoubtedly a work of genius, 'Forest Of The Dead' takes both the audience and the characters well out of their comfort zones and delivers quite possibly the most engrossing and stunning 45 minutes since the series was revived in 2005. It also contains enough ammo to blow any Catherine Tate doubters out of the water and into the stratosphere. The distinctive anti-spoiler stance of Steven Moffat's script continues, so we'll honour the future Who boss by being particularly cryptic with our clues this week.

There are also two red herrings lurking in the spoiler shadows this week. Good luck finding them!

-River Song sometimes shows The Doctor a little respect and asks him about erasure.

-The Shadows have a proper vocalist that's not Cliff Richard.

-Doctor Moon challenges someone to a game of chess on which millions of lives depend.

-The Shadows take hold of River Song's diary and coerce The Doctor into using a gun because of what they discover.
