The Second Doctor

1966 - 1969

Regeneration:

This incarnation's life began his life when his old body finally wore out during an encounter with the Cybermen and he regenerated for the first time. The Doctor found himself suspected as an impostor by his companion Ben Jackson and thrown into a battle with his old enemies, the Daleks, at the Earth colony on the planet Vulcan. The fact that the Daleks recognized the Doctor as their enemy convinced Ben of the his credentials and by the end of this adventure, the Doctor had won over the trust of Ben and Polly.

Appearance:

The Doctor dressed similarly to his earlier self, though in far less natty fashion, the trousers now clownishly large and the cravat replaced with a bow tie. He quickly abandoned the blue signet ring as it no longer fit him. In his first adventure on Vulcan he possessed a tall stovepipe hat. Later, Bernice Summerfield posing as a Dr. Seuss-like "famous hat collector", would take this hat, still in the Doctor's pocket, in the Land of Fiction. He had longish, rumpled hair and blue eyes. In later years, his dark hair began to gray.

Personality:

He has been nicknamed the "Cosmic Hobo" as the impish Second Doctor appeared to be far more scruffy and child-like than his first incarnation. Mercurial, clever, and always a few steps ahead of his enemies, at times he could be a calculating schemer who would not only manipulate people for the greater good but act like a bumbling fool in order to have others underestimate his true abilities. But despite the bluster and tendency to panic when events got out of control, the Second Doctor always acted heroically and morally in his desire to help the oppressed. More than any other perhaps, this incarnation of the Time Lord was a wolf in sheep's clothing.

• Since there are no apparent references to the Doctor having a second heart before the regeneration - on at least one occasion the First Doctor is suggested as having a single heart - it has been hypothesized that the Doctor grew his second heart as part of his regeneration.
• First meeting with Jamie McCrimmon, who goes off with him in the TARDIS.
• Eliminates the threat of the Daleks (for many years) during an adventure in which Polly and Ben Jackson are returned to Earth and the Doctor gains a new companion, Victoria Waterfield.

• The Time Lords put the Doctor on trial for breaking the non-interference policy and separate Jamie and Zoe from him.
• Encounters his first and third incarnation on at least two occasions, his fifth incarnation at least once, and his sixth incarnation also at least once.
• The Doctor again regenerates
