Patrick Troughton Is Matt Smith's Doctor!!

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has revealed that Patrick Troughton's second incarnation of The Doctor is his favorite.

Smith, who currently plays the Eleventh Doctor, explained that he loves the peculiarity that Troughton brought to the role.

"I love Patrick Troughton. [Troughton's 1967 serial] 'Tomb of the Cybermen' is one of my favorite stories. It's so creepy," he told Newsarama. "What I think is wonderful about Troughton is he's weird and peculiar but he never asks you to find him weird and peculiar. He was a great actor. And I think the Cybermen are as scary as they've ever been in that one story."

Troughton portrayed the renegade Time Lord from 1966 to 1969, facing Cybermen on a moon base and Yetis in the London underground along the way.

BBC Defends Doctor Who's Money Spending

The BBC has defended its decision to fly Matt Smith to Venice for an episode of Doctor Who Confidential.

In tomorrow's Doctor Who, the Doctor and his companion Amy (Karen Gillan) travel to the Italian city.

The show was filmed in Croatia, but Smith was flown to Venice to make Doctor Who Confidential.

The programme's makers were later accused by an unnamed source of wasting money but a BBC spokesperson has now issued a robust defence of the programme.

The representative told DS that the show had stuck to its "modest budget" and explained that the documentary was about Venice so could not be made anywhere else.

The spokesperson added that Doctor Who Confidential is "fantastically popular" with its audience and praised the strand for explaining the history of Venice to a young audience.

"Matt Smith made a short visit to Venice for Doctor Who Confidential to bring viewers a history of the city and to tell the story and inspiration behind the Doctor Who episode it follows," the representative said. "Unlike a drama, an historical film about Venice can't be recreated in Croatia."

Doctor Who continues tomorrow at 6pm on BBC One and is followed by Doctor Who Confidential at 7pm on BBC Three.

Could River Song be the Doctor's Mum????

Alex Kingston has suggested that her Doctor Who character River Song could be the Doctor's mother.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Kingston explained that she had previously thought that River was the Doctor's lover.

"I was absolutely certain," she said. "That's what I'd assumed. But when I was reading 'The Time Of Angels', I suddenly thought, 'My God, she's his mother!'"

However, Kingston explained that she still thinks the pair have a romantic relationship.

"The flirtation between them still indicates they have a much more intimate relationship further down the line, and I sort of hope it is that," she said. "I hope they're married. Otherwise, if she's his mother, the flirtation isn't quite appropriate!"

She continued: "[Showrunner] Steven Moffat always leaves a couple of doors open a chink, so he can change tack whenever he wants. That makes it exciting to act, but also a little dangerous. She could be the Doctor's grandmother, for goodness' sake! I don't think Steven wants to be pinned down."

No Advice for Smith???!!!

Former Doctor Who star Tom Baker has admitted that he would be reluctant to offer advice to the show's new lead actor Matt Smith.

The 75-year-old, who played the Time Lord's fourth incarnation from 1974 to 1981, revealed that he would prefer to leave Smith alone as he discovers his own approach to the role.

Speaking to the Daily Record, he explained: "I don't give advice to the young. I have often noticed that the young shudder at the sight of the old, so I keep silent."

Smith started filming for the iconic sci-fi show in Cardiff last month alongside his new co-star Karen Gillan (Amy Pond).

The 26-year-old will make his debut on the programme when David Tennant bows out as the Tenth Doctor at the end of three specials in early 2010.

Baker added: "David Tennant is a wonderful actor, a huge star. He is young and handsome. I never saw him in that role, but then, I never saw myself as The Doctor either."

The veteran actor recently announced that he is to return as the Fourth Doctor in a new audio series.
